Tasked with creating packaging for a candy based upon a film of our choice, I chose to go with the Coen Brother’s film “O’ Brother, Where Art Thou.” This film was pivotal in my childhood, as it was one of my Dad’s favorite films (I’ve watched it so many times that I can quote the film start to finish).

We were given quite a lot of creative freedom, as we got to pick both the movie AND the candy. I selected the chocolate frog, as frogs and toads are one of many pivotal plots within the film.

The whole concept was to capture an aesthetic I had never really delved into before, that being a bit more classical and less modern. The project was full of a lot of trial and error, mainly deriving from the complicated hierarchy of late 30s American packaging design. This project is packed to the brim with references/inspirations from the film and is one of my personal favorite projects I’ve completed.

The main packaging featured many of the main brand assets and elements, utilizing thin rounded corner counters, classic ornaments, and a striped edge around the lid, which is a nod to the character’s prisoner outfits.

The choice to utilize tins was chosen due to the prominance of pomade tins seen in the movie. The heirarchy and designs featured on the tins mimic that of 30s pomade/tobacco tins.

The number of tins is also inspired by the film, as there are three main characters. The name derives from when Pete “got turned into a toad” after a run in with a trio of sirens.**The name went through many variations, originally being titled “Runnofts,” in reference to the title the character’s refer to themselves by. This was later repourposed as a sort of fictional parent enterprise, as seen on the top of the labels and main packaging.

The photography took elements of the actual movie’s color grading to capture a similar feeling. We also modeled “one of the characters” caught sleeping, at their campsite, similar to scenes in the film.
